Glossary

Sit – means for the dog to Sit

Here - Call the dog to you

Stay – Means for the dog to stay put. In our case we like the dog to Stay after it sits without us having to say stay. However, teaching Stay as well is perfectly fine

Down – teaching pup to lay down

Clicker – a plastic clicking apparatus used in Marker training

Treat bag - used to carry food while teaching marker training

Marker training – technique where the trainer marks the desired behavior by either “Clicking” or saying “Good” when the pup issues the desired behavior. The marking comes before the reward – “usually a piece of kibble”

Heel - either to walk beside the trainer or to return to the trainer’s side.

Here Whistle – using a whistle to call the pup to you

Leash – a piece of either nylon, rubber, or leather with a clip, used in maintaining control of the pup - Usually 6ft long and clips to a collar.

Slip lead – Usually a piece of rope or leather with a ring on the end and the rope or leather pulled back through. Popular in Britain and Europe they are a very effective lead. “British Slip lead”

Flat Collar – typical collar used for the control of and to identify most dogs.

Ecollar – a modern training device using electrical impulse to reinforce desired behaviors in Canines.

Kennel Command - to go into a crate or kennel. Can be used to tell a dog to walk thru a door or to load into a vehicle.

Crate – a cage type structure used in keeping dogs safe.

Mark - a word meaning to watch for or to throw an object. Usually a bumper or bird.

Watch – a word meaning to watch for a thrown bumper or bird and or to be used before firing a shot to let the pup know what’s about to happen.

Hold – meaning a pup should hold an object in their mouth.

Force Fetch – a technique that adds pressure to reinforce a pup to fetch on command and hold.

Site Blind – usually involves a prop such as a bucket or white pole used in building confidence in teaching a pup to go out to it, even if they haven’t seen anything fall.

Pattern Blind – a taught blind usually started as a site blind and then converted to the pattern blind. A confidence blind returned to often as a routine to help teach and maintain Cold Blind running skills.

Blind Post – Usually a white portable electric fence post.

Suction – referring to an area of a previous blind or mark that may influence a dog to pull toward it and away from where they have just been sent.

Bucket – refers to a White bucket used to establish site blinds and or can be used to sit on while working dogs from the Line.

Poison Bird – refers to a mark being thrown when a dog is returning with a bird or bumper in it’s mouth and or a mark being thrown and then having a dog turn away from to send towards a blind.

Shopping – when a dog is sent to a Pile of bumpers and then the dog Can’t make up its mind which to pick up or will pick one up and drop it, then pick up another.

Hand Signals – a term used to describe a method of controlling the direction a dog should go from a distance. Trainer uses their arms and a whistle to direct the dog.

Casting – same as Hand Signals

Left/Right Back – a term meaning to send the dog away from the Handler. Spinning the dog either Left or Right as they turn away.

Left Over – a term meaning the dog turns the direction of the Handlers extended Left arm

Right Over - a term meaning the dog turns the direction of the Handlers extended Right arm.

Angle Cast – A term referring to an extended arm in a quarter position. Its neither an over or a straight back.

Memory Retrieve – a memory retrieve is a retrieve where the dog heels with the Handler out to a specific spot where a bumper is either dropped or pitched and then they both turn away from the bumpers and walk away.

Walk Out Retrieve – same as a Memory Retrieve

Cold Blind – Meaning to send a dog to an area that they didn’t see anything fall. Cold Blinds are the ultimate test of a dog and Handler working together.

Single Mark – meaning a single object has either been thrown for a pup or has fallen from the sky.

Double Mark – meaning two objects have been thrown for the pup or have fallen from the sky.

Triple Mark – meaning three objects have been thrown for the pup or have fallen from the sky.

Catch – N – Release Drill – An SLK Drill developed for teaching a dog to stop remotely to a single whistle blast.

Here – Sit Drill – A drill teaching a dog to stop and sit remotely to a single whistle blast.

T – Drill – The Basic drill to teach a dog to Handle and cast three dir

Water T – Similar to the T-Drill taking all the components and transferring to the water.

The Line – Referring to the place in a field trial or hunt test from which the dog and handler work from.
